North Country Home Performance

North Country Home Performance was founded to bring rigorous, diagnostic-led building performance work to Northern New York and the Adirondacks — a region where the climate is unforgiving and most homes were built long before building science was part of the conversation.

The practice is built around a single principle: understand the building before touching it. That means blower door testing, thermal imaging, and systematic envelope inspection before any corrective work is scoped or recommended. It means written findings, not verbal impressions. And it means honest advice about what to do first, what can wait, and what won't help.

We don't sell insulation, spray foam, or HVAC equipment. We don't have a financial interest in any particular corrective scope. Our job is to give you an accurate picture of your building and help you make good decisions about it.

Affiliation

Travco Environmental

North Country Home Performance operates in affiliation with Travco Environmental, a Northern New York firm with deep roots in building diagnostics, environmental assessment, and construction consulting. The Travco affiliation provides access to additional technical resources and a broader network of building science expertise when projects require it.

Travco Environmental has served the North Country region for decades, with experience spanning residential, commercial, and institutional building stock.

Why Diagnostics First

Most building problems are misdiagnosed

Cold rooms get more insulation. Wet attics get more ventilation. High bills get new windows. These are the standard responses — and they're often wrong. The actual cause is usually air leakage, and the fix is air sealing. Getting there requires a diagnostic, not a guess.

Sequence matters

In a cold climate, the order of operations in a building performance project is not arbitrary. Insulating before air sealing traps moisture. Adding mechanical ventilation before tightening the envelope wastes energy. The right sequence comes from understanding the building as a system.

Independence has value

A contractor who sells insulation has a reason to recommend insulation. A consultant who sells nothing has a reason to tell you the truth. We think that distinction matters, and we've built the practice around it.

North Country buildings are different

The Adirondacks and Northern New York present conditions — extreme cold, heavy snow loads, old building stock, rural locations — that require specific knowledge. Generic building science advice doesn't always translate. We work here, and we know what works here.

Start with a diagnosis.

The Home Performance Assessment is the right first step for any building performance project in the North Country.
